The private developer who secured a court order to demolish homes of residents of Obom-Kojontor community in Accra, says he is willing to do anything to alleviate the ordeals of the affected families.Over 500 residents of the Obom-Kojonto community in the Ga South Municipality were rendered homeless following the destruction of their houses by a private developer, assisted by a team of armed police officers.The residents said the team of police personnel came without warning at dawn eleven days ago with a man claiming to be acting on a court order, to demolish the houses.Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Freeman Tettey who confirmed the story on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Monday July 15 said the Police were not involved in the demolition exercise. According to him they were only present to provide security for those carrying out the demolition.Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng who visited the community said victims of the demolition exercise have taken refuge in a school block.The affected victims pass the night at the Obom-Kojontor school and pack out at dawn to allow students of the school have access to their classroom.The Ga South Municipal Assembly has supplied the victims with blankets and mattresses but this assistance was not enough to better their plight. Also affected by the demolition exercise in the Obom-Kojontor community are elderly people, some 100 years old. These old people have been left to struggle with how and where to lay their heads and find food for themselves and their dependents.But the private developer, speaking on an Accra-based TV station, TV3, on Monday July 15 said he wished the situation had not come this.The developer, Mac McCarthy, said he acquired the one hundred acre land some 25 years ago and all attempts to get the affected residents relocated had proven futile.“All they [residents] were asked to do was to bring one goat and two bottles of schnapps so that they [owners of the land] would go and show them another land...[but] they wouldn’t bother”, he said.He has however, reiterated his desire to support the affected victims of the community anyway possible.
