Residents and businesses in Kumasi and parts of the Ashanti Region are expected to experience temporary and localised power interruptions from July 20, 2026, as the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) begin the final phase of the Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade Project.

According to a press release issued on July 16, the works form part of government’s efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve power reliability in Kumasi and surrounding communities.

The project involves replacing the ageing 19-kilometre single-circuit transmission line between the Anwomaso (K2) and Kumasi (Ahodwo) (K1) substations with a modern double-circuit transmission line.

The upgraded infrastructure will increase transmission capacity from 364MVA to 978MVA, more than doubling the existing capacity to meet growing residential, commercial and industrial electricity demand.

The Ministry explained that the existing line has become increasingly overloaded due to rapid population growth and commercial expansion in Kumasi.

To facilitate the construction works, the transmission line will be temporarily de-energised, resulting in planned outages for customers served by the Kumasi (K1) and Anwomaso (K2) substations.

“GRIDCo and ECG will issue advance public notices ahead of each planned outage, and every effort will be made to restore electricity supply before the evening peak demand period,” the statement said.

The Ministry noted that about 90% of the project’s foundation works and 67% of tower assembly works have already been completed, with the remaining activities involving dismantling the existing line, erecting new towers and stringing new conductors.

The final phase of the project is expected to be completed within three months.

The Ministry apologised for the inconvenience and appealed for public patience, saying the temporary disruptions are necessary to deliver a stronger and more reliable electricity network for Kumasi, the Ashanti Region and the country.
