Samia Nkrumah, former Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has emphasised the significant role her father, Kwame Nkrumah, played in Ghana’s development. In an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat, she said, “Kwame Nkrumah is the founder of Ghana. He laid the foundation for what Ghana is today.”
Samia Nkrumah highlighted her father’s vision and leadership: "He was a prophet. He saw well into the future, and he organised, he wrote, he was a philosopher, and of course, he led our country.” She added, “He gave us the guidelines, and I think the ultimate solution for Africans to attain our dignity is for us to unite.”
When asked about the debate over whether Kwame Nkrumah is the sole founder of Ghana, Samia Nkrumah responded, “I believe without a shred of doubt that Kwame Nkrumah is the founder of Ghana. But having said that, I’ve always said that it doesn’t matter if others disagree.”
She emphasized the importance of working together for Ghana’s development, stating, “We can work together, but let’s set the record straight. We have never agreed, so I think it’s not productive to keep on arguing with each other.”
Samia Nkrumah concluded by acknowledging her father’s contributions, saying, “We’ve settled it. We have Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, the 21st of September, which is our father’s birthday. And no other figure in Ghana has that.”
The former Jomoro MP suggested that the nation has not honoured her father’s legacy enough.
“The day when his books become part of the curriculum, the day when his books are read and people are familiar with his ideas, agree or disagree with him, then Ghana indeed would have done him justice,” she stated.
She emphasized the need for Ghanaians to be educated on her father’s work. “We can debate it. We can argue about it. We can take things from it, reject others, but we have to become familiar with it,” she stated.
