Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has made it clear that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s intention to leave the country indefinitely will not prevent authorities from requiring his presence for questioning.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, the Special Prosecutor stated, "You are a citizen of Ghana, you were a public officer, and you served as Finance Minister for an extended period. If you have decided to leave the country indefinitely, that is your personal decision.
When a law enforcement agency requires your physical presence, you must comply, there is no choice in the matter, he directed this to the former minister.
He continued, "Your travel arrangements and plans are irrelevant to the law enforcement process. If we inform you that we need to see you in person to answer questions, you cannot simply refer us to your lawyers.
"We are not investigating your lawyers, we are investigating your actions as Finance Minister and the responsibilities you held in that role, that is why we need to speak with you directly" he said.
He concluded by stressing that Ofori-Atta’s decision to leave the jurisdiction will not obstruct the investigation.
The Office has thus officially declared him as a fugitive.
