President John Dramani Mahama has called for renewed efforts to complete the stalled 50 Czech steel bridges project, urging both Ghana and the Czech Republic to explore ways to overcome the challenges preventing its completion.
President Mahama acknowledged that the project had been hindered by the debt exchange programme but stressed the importance of finding solutions to re-engineer the initiative and continue its progress so a second phase can be implemented.
The President made the remarks on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, during a joint press briefing with the Czech President, Petr Pavel, who is currently on a three-day state visit to Ghana.
“I raised the issue of the 50 bridges project, which has been stalled due to the debt exchange programme. I urge the two countries to explore ways of re-engineering the project to ensure we complete the 50 Bridges Programme and also implement the second phase of 100 bridges,” he noted.
The 50 steel bridges, which were part of an agreement between the two nations, were designed to improve infrastructure and support economic development in rural Ghanaian communities. However, financial constraints linked to the country’s debt situation have delayed progress.
In addition to the bridges project, President Mahama also recognised the ongoing cooperation between Ghana and the Czech Republic in the field of healthcare.
He commended the Czech government’s continued support for the medical evacuation (medevac) programme, which provides healthcare services to vulnerable groups in Ghana.
“This medevac program has been essential in providing healthcare to vulnerable populations and has also allowed for the exchange of medical expertise and knowledge. It is not only a symbol of our deep cooperation but also an important partnership in addressing health challenges in the Sahel and Western African subregions.”
