The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says the ongoing load shedding exercise is likely to continue into next year if repair works on the West African Gas Pipeline are not completed by December 25.
According to the company, it can only supply power to its customers when it continues to receive power from its generators.
The load shedding has occurred as a result of the inability of the Sunon Asogli Power Plant to generate gas for power supply after pipelines belonging to WAPCo were damaged by a ship in Togo.
Director of operations at ECG, Tetteh Okine, told Joy News the system could stabilize if the zenith project in Tema which is being constructed to help address the load shedding problem is completed by next week.
“For us since we are not a generator, whatever we get from the generators we sell. If by December they can give us the extra energy then we will take that and sell to our customers then that means the load shedding will stop. If it continues beyond that then we will have to do the load shedding until we can get a full compliment of energy,” he explained.
He said traditionally, during the Christmas seasons, there are load increases and hoped the Zenith project in Tema will come on time, otherwise the situation may just remain the same if not get worse.
Mr. Okine also advised consumers to report to the Electricity Company whenever there are interruptions with their load-shedding timetable for the problem to be fixed.
