President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will soon commence the first phase of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam Project, a major national infrastructure initiative estimated to cost nearly one billion dollars.
The project is expected to play a critical role in boosting Ghana’s energy supply and supporting agricultural development.
The President made the announcement during a courtesy call by the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs on Tuesday, February 10.
He explained that due to the scale and complexity of the project, it will be executed in two distinct phases to ensure efficiency and long-term sustainability.
According to President Mahama, the first phase will focus on hydropower generation, with preparatory works aimed at enabling the dam to produce electricity.
He noted that the hydropower component alone is expected to generate between 60 and 70 megawatts of power.
He further disclosed that the project includes a solar power component designed to produce an additional 30 to 40 megawatts.
“Altogether, the project aims to generate over 100 megawatts, which is important to ensure the overall economic viability of the dam,” the President stated.
President Mahama added that the second phase of the project will concentrate on irrigation development.
This stage will involve the construction of canals, installation of pumping systems, and preparation of farmland to support large-scale irrigation, ensuring that the Pwalugu Dam serves both Ghana’s energy needs and agricultural transformation agenda.
