The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has cut sod for the construction of a new multipurpose Ndewura Jakpa palace in Damongo in the Savannah Region.
The project, which is being financed by the former President, is of Malian architectural designs and comprises a palace, a residence, and a meeting area.

Unlike the two existing palaces, one of which was built in the early 70s, and grossly lacks all the security features, enough living accommodation, and sanitary facilities, this new one has all it takes to provide absolute security and comfort for Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, his family his and sub-chiefs.

The National Democratic Congress flagbearer in an interview said the project has intentionally been designed to reflect the origin of Kagbenye [Descendants of Ndewura Sumali Jakpa].

"It has intentionally been designed with a Malian kind of designs. You know the Sahelian because the Gonjas came from Mande, they have used the Mande's architecture to design this palace".
"So, if you look at it, you will think you are at Atibutu or Songai. It will provide a more befitting and comfort for Chief", the former president indicated.

Some residents shared their thoughts about the project with Myjoyonline.
"As the saying goes, it's better late than never. Some of us have looked forward to this day for such an image-lifting structure and it has never been until today. God bless the former president", Karim Charles, a resident said.

For Maridia Alhassan, "the old palace was exposing the safety of our King too much. We were just being denigrated with the old palace but now, I'm proud, to say the least.”

The project, which has Architect Atibila as the consultant and Grandeza Construction Company Limited as the builders, is expected to be completed in October 2024.
