Former President John Mahama is poking fun at Vice President Dr Bawumia and other individuals who served in the Akufo-Addo-led administration and have declared their willingness to run for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership.
Speaking during a campaign in Akatsi in the Volta Region, Saturday, March 4, Mr Mahama ridiculed the Vice President’s boast that the Akufo-Addo administration has a capable economic management team.
The former President said the Vice President and other members of what was dubbed “the solid economic management team” are all avoiding responsibility for the deplorable state of the economy.
“They are behaving as if they were not part of it. All of them ‘they, dey inside’. They all have contributed to the mess in which we are. Because Vice President Bawumia said, ‘our Economic Management Team, we have Professor Gyan Baffour, we have Alan Kyerematen, we have honourable Osafo-Maafo, we have Ken Ofori-Atta. What a solid team’,” Mahama said, mimicking Dr Bawumia’s voice.
The former President’s mockery is a response to the government’s failure to fulfil some promises made while campaigning for the presidency in 2016 and 2020.
It is recalled that in 2015, Dr Bawumia was known to have condemned then-President Mahama and his government for the economic hardships Ghanaians faced.
Dr Bawumia at a point referred to Mr Mahma as an incompetent leader.
But since the NPP assumed office, they have also gone back on some of their words, such as promises that the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta made in 2022 that the Akufo-Addo government would not go to the IMF for a bailout.
Moreover, Mr Kyerematen, who was a member of the “strong economic management team,” resigned from his position as Minister of Trade and Industry on January 6, 2023, so that he could devote himself fully to his campaign to represent the NPP in the 2024 presidential elections.
As a result, Mr Mahama mocked that the ‘solid economic management team’ is now nowhere to be found.
He added that “this is where the solid team has gotten us.”
