Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Okraku

Former Ghana U-23 national team coach, Malik Jabir, says he is disappointed with the Ghana Football Association’s failure to make an allocation from the FIFA Covid-19 Emergency Fund to settle indebtedness to ex-trainers of various national teams.

The GFA announced, last week, beneficiaries of the $1.8 million FIFA & CAF Covid-19 Fund but the list excluded former coaches whose salaries have been in arrears for years.

The relief Fund was designed to deliver support and assistance to both member associations and the wider football community.

Per provisions of the Fund’s operational model and governance structure, implementation was to go beyond top-level football for broader reach and flexibility.

Consideration was to be extended to national teams, women's football, lower - tier domestic league, youth and grassroots football as well as other stakeholders.

Veteran coach, Malik Jabir, who was in charge of the Black Meteors between 2014 and 2016, says he received salary for only three months of his 36-month duty period.

He says there are a lot former national team coaches who are owed various sums of money by the GFA after rendering services to the nation.

“Why is it that they shared the money all through but they never thought about the liabilities they came to meet like the monies owed the U-23 national team under me?

"They owe us; they know they owe us. Our match bonuses and salaries should be paid. Now, money has come, they are sharing because that is their interest and they don’t think about us,” Malik said.

The former Black Meteors coach, told Luv Sports all such people are yet to be captured in the disbursement of the Covid-19 fund, describing it as unfortunate development.

He is more, as he puts it, disillusioned the GFA President has ignored his numerous calls since he took office nine months ago.

“When I call, they see my number but won’t pick up...he’s never answered my call. I just want to remind them that they shouldn’t only think about the current.

"If you owe us and you think we should forgo it, I don’t think that is right. That’s why I have come out to tell them that, as long as they now have money and they don’t pay us, we are here still waiting, and we are not going to forgive them,” he said.

In a recent interview on Joy FM, General Secretary of the GFA, Prosper Harrison Addo, and revealed disbursement of the FIFA Covid- 19 Fund did not include payment of national team coaches.

“We have not said we are going to pay coaches of the national team. Indeed, for the coach of the national team, $17,000 will not do.”
