McDan Group and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance Ghana's capabilities in marine transport and logistics.
This collaboration aims to develop a marine terminal facility on the Volta River, named the "ElectroChem Terminal, Port of Ada," primarily focusing on the management and export of bulk natural and processed salts.
GPHA, established under the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority Act of 1986, is responsible for managing and regulating Ghana's ports.
McDan Group, a private company incorporated in Ghana, specialises in shipping, freight forwarding customs clearance, cargo & port handling, transportation and haulage, fixed based operations, real estate, construction, civil engineering, agriculture, salt mining, among others.
Its salt production operation is run through its subsidiary, ElectroChem Ghana Limited. The partnership arises from McDan's need for a more efficient logistics solution for salt exports, given the challenges of road haulage to the distant Port of Tema.
The primary objective is to create a terminal that will streamline the export of salt, reduce logistics costs, and ultimately support regional and global market demands, according to the MOU.

Development Plans:
The project will encompass:
- Feasibility Studies: Conducting necessary studies to assess technical, economic, and environmental viability.
- Navigation Infrastructure: Developing access channels and navigation aids to facilitate safe shipping from the Atlantic Ocean to the terminal.
- Port Facilities: Building quay walls, berths for vessels, and terminal facilities for salt management and cargo services.
- Road Network Improvements: Upgrading road access to enhance connectivity between Ada and major highways.
Collaboration Framework:
Both parties will form a Joint Project Development Team to oversee technical meetings, stakeholder engagement, and operational protocols.
McDan will handle the project's financial aspects, while GPHA will provide guidance and support for acquiring necessary permits and approvals.
Economic Impact:
The project aims to bolster Ghana's salt production capabilities, with ElectroChem's potential output exceeding 2 million tonnes annually.
This increase in production is expected to create jobs, reduce salt imports, and enhance the socio-economic conditions of the Ada community.
Significant steps have already been taken, including acquiring the port site, conducting feasibility studies, and engaging with stakeholders. Ongoing discussions with potential investors aim to secure financing for the project.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Daniel McKorley on behalf of McDan Group and Michael Achagwe Luguje, Director General of GPHA.
Dr. Daniel McKorley, representing McDan Group, highlighted the MoU as a vital step toward strengthening Ghana's marine sector and contributing to broader economic development.
