Minister of Trade and Industry of Singapore, Alvin Tan has revealed some tips that African countries can emulate to have their economy blossom.
Speaking on The Hard Truth, the Minister said Singapore rewards meritocracy, thus Africa leaders could consider doing same.
“In the early stages of our development, we focused on making sure we gather the key skills that are relevant to the world. So we have ensured that meritocracy is one of the foundations of Singapore’s success.
“So you reward those who have done well through our education system and through our hiring to ensure that we address issues such as corruption,” he told host Akosua Konadu.
Mr. Tan further disagreed that the method is preventing late bloomers from exploring their skills.
According to him, through multiple pathways system, individuals who are not academically good are not left out.
“I had to repeat a year in school, yet I found my path irrespective. My sister also didn’t do very well in primary school, yet she also found her path.
“And I think that is the merit of our system, that we are creating multiple pathways. So no matter what you are skilled at, we have provided multiple areas, space and excellence to help our people to gain new skills. Also, we are helping to ensure that good foreign companies come in to help our people,” he said.
