Deputy Information Minister, James Agyenim Boateng, has condemned attempts by the NPP and NDC to cause disaffection for some police officers. The opposition party wants the Inspector General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye out, while the Greater Accra Region branch of the ruling party calls for MTTU Commander, ACP Angwubutoge Awuni’s head. The two are being accused of bias and unprofessional conduct in the on-going biometric registration. However, Mr. Agyenim Boateng said the persistent attack and threats to security personnel have a serious implication for national cohesion, especially, in the run-up to the December elections. He said the posture of two parties is not healthy for the country’s infant democracy. Mr. Agyenim Boateng was contributing to a discussion on Nhyira FM’s Saturday morning talk show, ‘Kukurantumi’ in Kumasi. He however urged the security personnel to uphold the code of conducts to win the trust of Ghanaians. “I think that all these calls are not helpful, but police officers must not behave as politicians. If any police officer feels like being into politics the person must resign from his position and openly join politicians to be identified as such,” he stated. The Deputy Information Minister believes the NDC has, at least, been absolved from opposition accusation of under-hand dealing between government and police.
