Okaikwei Central MP, Patrick Boamah, has raised strong concerns over what he describes as a concealed plan by the government to increase airport passenger service charges from GH₵5 to GH₵100.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the MP criticised the move as an “astronomical and unjustifiable” adjustment.
“Airport passenger service charge from GH₵5 to GH₵100 per passenger. The government is hiding this in the report. Mr Speaker, a thousand per cent increase in GH₵5 to GH₵100 per passenger for both domestic and international flights.”
He argued that such a steep increment would place an excessive burden on travellers and worsen the already high cost of transportation.
“Mr Speaker, this is a very serious charge that the country must be made aware of. Is this [increment] the resetting? Now, we cannot even drive on our roads and flying too has become too expensive. Is that what they [NDC] promised this country?”
Transport Minister Rejects Claim of Approved Increase
The Minister for Transport pushed back against the assertions, insisting that no such increment has been approved.
He clarified that the figures referenced by the MP are only recommendations contained in the Fees and charges Bill, which must undergo full Parliamentary consideration before any implementation.
The Minister further noted that the proposed revision is not targeted at domestic travel, emphasising that discussions are still ongoing and subject to legislative scrutiny.
