The Minority in Parliament say they will continue to boycott Parliamentary proceedings until the Attorney-General drops charges against New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist Nana Darkwa.
The MPs walked out of Parliament in solidarity with the detention of an NPP radio panelist who alleged Mr. Rawlings deliberately burnt his house.
Nana Darkwa was granted bail by an Accra High Court on Friday after his lawyer Kwame Akufo filed an application at the court seeking bail for his client.
Despite his release, Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu says they will not call off the boycott until Nana Darkwa has been set free.
“We recognise that what has come out today is something positive and be appreciative of it and thank the relevant authorities for that. Ultimately, the aim is to discontinue prosecution,” he said.
The Minority would continue to stay out of Parliament also because they are not sure what the turn of events would be in the days ahead, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.
“Between today and Tuesday, we reserve the right to review our position depending on what happens further, that is, beyond what has happened now. For all you know, may be, the guy will be rearrested. We don’t know. And so we are saying that we are monitoring events and we’ll take the appropriate decision as and when necessary,” the Minority Leader told Joy FM’s Newsnight on Friday.
Nana Darkwa was arrested on Thursday on the instruction of an aide to former president Jerry John Rawlings.
Police initially said the NPP activist was whisked away to protect him from an angry mob which had besieged a Kokomlemle-based radio station, Top Radio, to beat him up.
He was however processed for court hours after and slapped with a two-week remand term to reappear on 3 March 2010.
The development has thrust Nana Darkwa into the limelight as stalwarts of the NPP have thrown their support behind him.
Already he has served notice he is unfazed by threats to prosecute him.
