Moving Health has launched three new ambulances in Wa West District - Poyentanga, Bultuo, and Chogsie communities.

This expansion was made possible through the generous support of the KGL Foundation.

Since 2019, Moving Health, a nonprofit organization operating in Ghana, has been at the forefront of creating custom-built, three-wheeled ambulances designed for rural communities.

These ambulances are tailored to provide safe and accessible medical transportation, especially in areas where conventional emergency vehicles may not easily reach.

Moving Health's presence in the Upper West Region has grown significantly, with 21 ambulances now operating across Sissala East, Wa East, and Wa West Districts, providing over 100,000 people with access to emergency transportation.

The ambulances, designed with the local terrain and needs in mind, are equipped with a removable stretcher, seating for family members and healthcare personnel, and basic life-support features.

The tricycle design ensures they can easily navigate the challenging roads of rural Ghana, providing a much-needed solution to communities that previously relied on less reliable transport methods.

Proudly built in Ghana, these ambulances support local fabricators and suppliers, contributing to economic growth and empowering local industries.

The launch event held on Thursday, October 10, 2024, took place at the District Health Directorate, Wechiau and was attended by representatives from various sectors, including the Regional Health Directorate, District Health Directorate, National Ambulance and Fire Service, Health workers, community representatives and other relevant stakeholders.

During the event, Prosper Lana, representing the Regional Health Director of the Upper West Region, expressed his sincere appreciation for this much-needed initiative in Wa West.

He highlighted how, in the past, many patients in emergencies had to rely on motorcycles, a practice that posed significant risks.

With the introduction of these ambulances, access to emergency medical care will significantly improve, complementing the efforts of the National Ambulance Service in the region.

KGL Foundation, whose support was instrumental in this expansion, reiterated its dedication to backing innovative solutions aimed at reducing maternal mortality and improving healthcare delivery in underserved communities, expressing hopes that the ambulances would help improve healthcare outcomes for the communities and surrounding areas.

Moving Health’s Country Director, Isaac Amoah Quansah, took the opportunity to provide an in-depth overview of the ambulances’ design and functionality.

Built to withstand the rugged terrain of rural Ghana, the ambulances feature a spacious interior with a polished design, offering safe transport for up to four passengers, including medical staff, patients and relatives.

The Wa West District Health Director, represented by Alidu Shaban emphasised the significance of the project and its potential impact on the health sector of the district, commended Moving Health for its tremendous efforts in revolutionising emergency transportation in the region and pledged their commitment to sustaining the ambulances.

The Stakeholders present at the event expressed their heartfelt gratitude and joy for this innovative initiative and expressed commitment to working together to ensure the longevity and success of these ambulances in their communities.

Moving Health also extended their special thanks to Dr Damien Punguyire, the Upper West
Regional Director of Health, and his team for their constant encouragement and collaboration.

Their guidance has been instrumental in the continued success and growth of Moving Health's
impact in the region.
