The Member of Parliament for Lawra Nandom, Dr. Benjamin Kumbuor has told of how he and some members of his family escaped death at the hands of four robbers who invaded his Manet Ville house on the Spintex Road in Accra at the weekend.
The chilling experience, according to the outspoken MP, has left the family traumatised and it is an experience he would never wish for any living soul.
In an interview with Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoe, he said two of the armed, unmasked robbers who initially told him they had been sent to kill him, held a knife to his throat and a gun to the head in the glare of his wife, who plaintively offered some undisclosed sum of money to dramatically change the horrific scene.
The gang after accepting the sum, demanded mobile phones and lap tops, all of which they took away.
They had by then locked up two of his cousins who had been sleeping in his living room, and also locked up three children in an another room.
Since the harrowing incident, Dr Kumbuor says he and his family have been compelled to sleep in the living room because the children have refused to go into their room where they were locked up.
He has consequently called for protection for public figures like himself and his fellow MPs.
According to Dr. Kumbuor, it is high time the nation re-looked the nature of security it should provide its officials, including MPs, if they must also sacrifice to help build the nation. He said District Chief Executives go to bed with a police guard to protect them and it would not be out of place to do same for MPs.
Minister of State at the Ministry of the Interior, Nana Obiri Boahen told Joy News that the question of providing armed guards for MPs is long overdue given the critical role they play for the nation, and said it is very possible for them to be protected both at work and at home.
Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nkawkaw, Hon. Kwabena Okercheri Adusa also supported the call and said per the nature of the MPs’ job, they easily could court the disdain of many in society and should be protected at all times.
