The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, is touting his proposed "24-hour economy" policy as a crucial initiative for transforming the Ghanaian economy.
Mr Mahama contends that this policy will address the pressing issue of Ghanaian youth embarking on perilous journeys across the Sahara and the Mediterranean in search of better opportunities in Europe.
During the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Sunyani Catholic Diocese over the weekend, Mahama reiterated his commitment to implementing the 24-hour economy policy, driven by the urgent need to address the lack of employment opportunities for the vibrant youth in Ghana.
He highlighted the increasing frustration among the youth due to the scarcity of jobs, emphasising that they are losing faith in the country's future.
Mr Mahama stated, "Ghanaian youth are voicing their disillusionment by risking their lives in dangerous migrations across the Sahara and the Mediterranean to enter Europe. We can reverse this trend by strengthening our economy and creating more jobs for our young people. This is an urgent call to action."
The government, acknowledging Mahama's proposal, has incorporated it into the 2024 budget under the name 'night economy,' as confirmed by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta. However, Mr Mahama clarified that his vision for a 24-hour economy goes beyond a focus on boosting tourism at night.
He envisions an economy where all business sectors operate on a three-shift system around the clock, seven days a week, within a secure and safe environment.
