I love boots and though I own only two pairs (to my shame), I wear them as often as possible. So this is how during a recent event my team organized, I decided to wear my favourite pair among the two.
I planned way ahead what I would wear and how I would look. Getting close to the day, I realized that the clothes might not come out as I pictured but I still had my favourite boots so I knew I would still feel good on the D-day.
So the big day for the event came and yes I wore my boots! Oh yes I felt really good in them. To me, everything about my look was perfect. I was wearing my boots, wasn’t I? And oh, the icing on the cake was when the really nice MC commented that my boots ‘were on fleek!’ Imagine my excitement.
To add a perfect finish, I had a couple of people send me messages about my boots after the event. My day was officially perfect.
But apparently, some few friends thought it was a no-no. ‘Boots during a daytime event? No Ama! We don’t do that?’
And I am thinking ‘Really?’ I had no idea that I was breaking a code. My friends had a field day teasing me a couple of weeks later when they brought it up. I was actually surprised because I never saw it from their perspective.
Would I wear boots again for a daytime event? Absolutely. Why? Because life is too short.
You see, I have learnt that there are so many things we may love to do as human beings but cannot and will not do because they are against the word of God, may hurt other people (family and loved ones) or breed envy.
Like when I eat my brother’s jollof because it looks so delicious even when I know he is super hungry – that hurts him. Or when I covet my sister’s brand new ‘tear rubber’ Chrysler and wish something will scratch it? That is envy at work. However, as for my boots they do not hurt anyone, and hopefully do not breed any envy. In fact, on hindsight they performed a very important function on that day.
1. I felt really good in them,
2. Those who loved it smiled,
3. Those who thought it was a no-no laughed.
So in the end, it was a win-win for all of us that day. Now tell me, why won’t I wear my boots again for a daytime event?
What I am saying is this: not everything is permissible, I admit. But for the few one or two harm-free things we can do to feel good, have a good laugh and create priceless memories from, we must actually do them because really life is not that long. What if spirits don’t get to wear boots? Eh?
We must live!
