The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is set to liaise with other bodies to desilt choked gutters in the Upper West Regional Capital after a downpour Saturday morning left scores of people homeless.
The Regional Coordinator of NADMO, Seidu Sulemani who spoke to Joy News said choked gutters in the Wa Municipality are largely to blame for the flooding the residents experienced after the six-hour-long rain.

“…I will meet Chief Executive [of NADMO] and the acting Regional Minister so we see how we will fast track desilting of gutters in the municipality…even some of the bridges water cant flow through them,” Mr. Sulemani told Joy News correspondent, Rafiq Salam.

Mr. Sulemani also expressed shock over the timing of the rain, saying that it has caught them unaware.
“…what I will say is that the rain has caught us by surprise…we least expected such rain within the Wa Municipality,” he said.
Some of the affected residents who spoke to Joy News also lamented over the gravity of the rains, saying that they have lived in those communities for long and had never experienced that amount of rain.

“…we were sleeping when the rains flooded our rooms…we were confused and didn’t know what to do. Some of us used rubber buckets to scoop the water out of the rooms but some property has been destroyed,” a weary resident narrated.
A 67-year-old woman who lives in one of the flooded communities told Rafiq that the government should construct a bridge in the valley to salvage the situation before the raining season comes.
