A member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mike Nii Nortey Oquaye Jnr has stated that it is fallacious for members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) party to argue that if Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, flag bearer of the NPP refuses to go to court on the drug allegations leveled against him then it means he is guilty as charged.
He said the allegation that Nana Akufo-Addo uses drugs is just a strategy by the NDC to discredit his (Nana Addo) candidature because he poses a threat to the ruling party’s dream of retaining power in 2012.
On Tuesday August 2, 2011, Nana Asante Bediatuo, counsel for Nana Akufo-Addo in a statement issued in Accra challenged those who claim to have evidence that his client is a cocaine or marijuana addict to provide them or shut up.
He said the accusers should be ready to face damages if they do not refrain from making such scurrilous allegations.
He noted that an official document from the US authorities set the records straight that Nana Akufo –Addo was never arrested at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, USA for possession of narcotic drugs as it is being alleged in the media.
Nana Asante Bediatuo added Nana Akufo-Addo is not considering taking the matter to court because of his believe in freedom of the press.
But editor of the Daily Post newspaper Michael Dokosi who had published stories alleging that Nana Akufo-Addo is a drug addict and was arrested at the J.F.K International Airport for possession of drugs in an interview on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday maintained that he has evidence to back his story.
Mr. Dokosi who described the document provided by Nana Asante Bediatuo to clear his client of the drug allegation as ‘bogus’ said he would only make his evidence available if the flag bearer of the NPP Nana Akufo-Addo goes to court.
However, Mike Oquaye Jnr. who was a panelist on the programme observed that the flag bearer of the NPP will not waste precious time going in and out of court to defend himself on such a baseless accusation whiles he needs to concentrate on his campaign.
“We live in a country where people should stop making insinuations; people should stop casting aspersions; people should stop pretending and let us talk about the bread and butter issues” he added.
He reiterated the fact that Nana Akufo-Addo remains unperturbed and focused in ensuring the NPP wins power in 2012.
Mike Oquaye Jnr. urged the ruling party to focus on delivering on their Better Ghana Agenda rather than seeking to malign people who do not share in their political ideology.
