The 2024 Vice-Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has confirmed that he is under investigation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
The probe, according to the former Manhyia South Member of Parliament, relates to his previous role as Minister for Education.
Addressing the press in Accra on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Dr Opoku Prempeh—widely known as NAPO—disclosed that he had been summoned by the NIB on two occasions to respond to inquiries about his time at the Education Ministry.
He suggested the matters raised were routine and well-documented. “As I speak to you now, I have been invited by the NIB on two different occasions to answer some questions from my time as Education Minister—some issues I don’t even remember. But the records are there to show,” he stated.
This revelation comes amid a broader anti-corruption initiative launched by President John Dramani Mahama's administration, aimed at scrutinising the conduct of former officeholders.
Multiple state institutions, including EOCO and the NIB, have been mobilised to investigate suspected malfeasance during the tenure of the previous government.
Among those also under the spotlight is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, who is currently being investigated by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over allegations of corruption and money laundering.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has already announced that the Attorney-General is preparing to prosecute 33 cases of corruption and related offences.
These cases were derived from findings by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Team, a special task force established following Mahama’s return to power in 2024.
