Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George Nartey, has called on the members of the National Cathedral Board to dissociate themselves from the alleged 'stealing' that has characterised the project.

According to the NDC lawmaker, it is 'untenable' for the respected church leaders to allow themselves to be manipulated by politicians for their parochial interests.

Speaking on Accra-based GHOne TV on Tuesday, the outspoken legislator expressed his grievances about the alleged corruption and impropriety that has characterised the project.

He therefore admonished the respective leaders of the faith community to preserve their dignity by staying away from the controversial project.

"To all the apostolic fathers, to the our respected men and women of faith, especially those of you who sit on the board, it is untenable, respectfully for you to continue to sit on that board", Sam George implored.

The MP continued, "Many of you gave off your youth for the establishment and propagation of the gospel; especially in the charismatic faith in our land.

"You have taught us in many Sunday sermons to speak truth to authority and as your son, I make an appeal to you the apostolic fathers to save yourselves and your dignity and disassociate yourself from the blatant stealing".

"Do not be accomplices to acts akin to what Ananias and Sapphira did", the MP added.

The admonishment by the lawmaker comes in the midst of recent controversies surrounding the project.

In a Facebook post on Monday, North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa accused the Secretary of the Cathedral of using an alias to receive money from the Cathedral.

In his view, the conduct of Rev Kusi Boateng amounts to conflict of interest, which must be investigated.

In his post, he questioned the integrity of the preacher and berated his involvement in the scandalous act.

Shortly after Mr Ablakwa's revelations, portions of a letter, purported to be Bishop Dag Heward-Mills' resignation letter from the National Cathedral Secretariat surfaced in the media.

In the said letter, the leader of the LighHouse Chapel International disclosed his reasons for recusing himself from the board.

Part of his reasons include the lack of transparency concerning the cost of the project as well the presence of unseen hands in decision making.

These developments within the course of the week have subsequently resurrected the debates about the National Cathedral.

According to the critics of the project, even though the project is a notable gesture in recognising God, the timing of the project is not ideal.

In their view, due to the prevailing economic crisis in the country, it is needless for government to focus on such a project in the face of the glaring hardship.

The critics have further argued that the project is a personal campaign promise of President Akufo-Addo and therefore state resources should be allocated to its execution.

Meanwhile, proponents of the project, including Victor Kusi Boateng, have maintained that the Cathedral will benefit the country in many useful ways.

In multiple justifications for the project, the advocates of the Cathedral have stated that when completed, it will serve as a tourist destination to help generate revenue for the country.

This they say is one of the reasons why the novel project must not be stifled with opposition and ridicule.
