The GFA Normalization Committee has revealed the modalities and financial package for its 64-team special competition scheduled to be held from January 26 to April 21.
The details were made known to first and second tier clubs earmarked for the competition during a meeting at the GFA Conference room Tuesday morning.
The Normalization Committee failed to come clear on the budget and source of funding for the special competition. However, an amount of around $800,000 is being sourced from government coffers.
Tournament structure
The special competition will begin with a Round of 64 pairing involving all 16 Premier League clubs and 48 Division One clubs in a two-legged affair.
The 32 winners from this stage will be drawn into TIER 1 with eight groups of four teams each for a two-legged round-robin from which the top two in each group advance to the Round of 16. From the R16 comes the quarterfinal, semi-final and final stages of TIER 1.
TIER 2 will also see 32 losers from the first round also categorized into eight groups of four teams with each playing six games like in TIER 1. The top two teams in each group also advance to the Round of 16 for TIER 2. From the R16 comes the quarterfinal, semi-final and final stages.
TIER 1 will determine Ghana’s representative for the 2019/2020 Caf Champions League while the ultimate winner for TIER 2 secures the slot for the Caf Confederation Cup.
