The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is advocating for free, fair and transparent election in 2008 to deepen democracy in the country.
Mr Dominic Akugri, Bawku West District Director of NCCE who announced this noted that the cost of developing the country’s democracy was enormous and priceless.
He therefore appealed to individuals or groups not to destroy the achievements made for their selfish interest.
Mr Akugri was addressing a forum at Zebilla to launch this year’s Constitutional Week on Thursday.
It was under the theme, “The Sovereign Will of the People and Election 2008”.
He called on political parties to avoid insults during the campaign and concentrate on issues that would bring peace, understanding and development to the Ghanaian society.
Mr Akugri urged the people to study the constitution and be abreast with their rights, and gave the assurance that the NCCE would undertake an intensive advocacy on constitutional rights in the district.
Mr Seidu Alabugri, a resource person at the forum said the people had the right to participate actively in national politics and offer their views and suggestions on government policies and programmes through the media.
Mr Alabugri noted that the Electoral Commission needed to be fully resourced to undertake its duties well and called on the media to give equal attention to all political parties.
Mr Robert Akolbilla, Bawku West Deputy District Coordinator launching the week, commended Government for instituting the week as a means to give special attention to educate the public on the constitution.
