The Alliance for the Empowerment of NDC Constituency Branch Executives is asking Ghanaians to bite the bullet and adopt the same stance the Americans took during the era of former President Ronald Reagan where striking workers were dismissed. Ronald Reagan in 1981 famously fired 11,000 striking Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) and barred them from federal jobs until 1993. Former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was said to have taken similar decision. “The time is NOW” for Ghana to follow suit, a statement signed by the chairman of the Alliance Ebenezer Arkutu advocated. He said: “Today, with few weeks into a major examination across the country, hundreds and thousands of Ghanaian children are on the verge of being slaughtered in the name of strike and/or being used as a bargaining chip.” The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have declared an indefinite strike starting from Monday, March 18 due to governments’ failure to address their grievances relating to their conditions of service. Ebenezer Arkutu said the group welcomes suggestions by labour expert Mr. Austin Gamey, asking Ghanaians to make their voices heard and suggest ways to address strike actions in Ghana. However, he said, “we disagree with Mr. Austin Gamey that the practice of using labour strike in getting resolutions for labour grievances is a sad practice because the perpetrators are educated people. “No, the use of labour strike in itself is a crime against humanity (not a sad practice) and the perpetrators are criminals because the court is the final arbiter in all matters of dispute. Over the years, the leaders of these labour Unions have been tolerated and have taken the laws into their own hands and are continuously embarking on social lynching.” Mr Arkutu reiterated: “Ghanaians must take the same stance the Americans took during the era of former President Ronald Reagan when Labour Unions in the name of federal state strikes were taking the United States of America for granted. Also learn from Venezuela under president Hugo Chaves. The time is NOW.”
