The debate over whether or not government should remove subsidy on fuel has taken an interesting twist with the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Aowin kicking against the policy.
Mathias Kwame Ntow says the removal of the subsidy will greatly affect the poor in the country.
His comments come in the wake of an imminent announcement of an increase in petroleum products as a result of the government's intended removal of subsidy on fuel.
The Bank of Ghana has given government the go ahead to remove subsidy on the products on the grounds that, it is unsustainable and risky to the economy.
Finance Minister Seth Terpker has said the monies that would otherwise have gone into subsidizing fuel will now be channelled into other pro-poor policies including the provision of free uniforms, exercise books, etc.
But the NDC Member of Parliament for Aowin in the Western Region Mathias Kwame Ntow on the floor of Parliament argued that the removal of the subsidy will widen the gap between the rich and the poor.
“I will not advocate for the subsidy of fuel to be removed because if that is done it is the poor farmer in my constituency that will suffer.
“Members of Parliament by God’s grace may be able to afford the prices even if it goes high.
“If the subsidy is removed, it is the drivers who will be made richer and rich will continue to be rich because they are the owners of this cars that ply our roads,” he said.
