NDK Financial Services and the Trust Hospital have conducted a breast screening exercise for more than 300 women around Tema and its environs.
The exercise, which took place at the Tema branch of NDK, was to mark Pink October, an initiative by the two institutions to create more awareness about breast cancer.
For NDK, the exercise drew attention on the symptoms and early report to hospitals once women detect changes in their breasts also formed part of its 25th anniversary’s programs to give back to society.
Victoria Partey Newman, a medical doctor from the Trust Hospital, who took the women through the education, encouraged them to avoid the intake of alcohol, promote exclusive breastfeeding, exercise and reduce the intake of contraceptives.
She explained that as at now 3,000 cases of breast cancer are reported yearly and out of the number, the prevalence rate among the ages 21 to 28 years’ among women is rising.
Dr. Newman also advised the women to be familiar with their breast and report any changes to the Well Woman Clinic at the Trust Hospital and also avoid putting phones and monies in their breasts.
She also called on all corporate entities to aid in the fight of the disease.

“We want to engage all corporate organizations to come together and achieve this common goal of screening, the less probability that they (women) will get breast cancer,” she said.
The divisional Head of Credit at NDK, Felix Hagan, stated that, the financial institution decided to partner with the hospital to undertake the exercise because “based on statistics, breast cancer is one of the major killers of women in the world”.
He explained that the Well Woman Clinic, under the Trust Hospital was basically set up to help women by giving them advice, support with children and women; and breast cancer is one of its core mandate.
Mr. Hagan further stated that “as an institution, we don’t just give loans, we don’t just do investments but we also believe in investing in people we work with and investing in the community we exist in”.
The screening has earlier taken place at the Osu Market, Dansoman branch of the Well Woman Clinic as well as the Osu branch of NDK. This event brings to the end the Breast cancer Month activities for both companies.
