A spokesperson for one of the four aspiring candidates for the Convention People’s Party chairmanship race is alleging the ruling party is seeking the election of a 'favourable' candidate.
Richard Keelson, spokesperson for Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom further alleged that the ruling National Democratic Congress party is influencing delegates of the CPP - who are converging at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra ahead of the party’s national delegate’s congress Saturday - to vote for a CPP leadership which will be malleable and kowtow to the whims of the NDC.
He was speaking to Joy News on Friday.
Four candidates - Ms Samia Yaba Nkrumah, MP for Jomoro, Professor Edmund N. Delle, former Chairman; Mr Ladi Nylander, current Chairman, and Ms Araba Bentsi-Enchill, a Vice Chairman are contesting the party’s chairmanship position.
Six candidates are also vying for the Vice Chairmanship position- Ms Rodaline Ayarna; Mr. Ibrahim M. Seidu; Mrs Susan Adu Amankwah; Mr. William Nana Buckman; Mr. Oteng Anane; and Mr. Kojo Armah.
The General Secretary slot is being contested by Nii Armah Akomfrah; Ivor Kwabena Greenstreet and Mr Ekow Duncan; whilst Mr Kosi Dedey and Mr Seth Gomnah are contesting for the National Treasurer slot.
Richmond Keelson says credible information picked up from National Security indicates that the ruling government is influencing delegates to vote for a particular person as chairman who will gladly align with the NDC in the event of a run-off.
He would not however mention the name of the 'compromised' candidate.
But the ruling party has rubbished the claims.
NDC National Propaganda Secretary, Richard Quarshigah says the charge is frivolous because the government has no intention to influence the decision by the delegates because the CPP is already allies to the government.
He explained that both parties are socialist in orientation and believes in the Nkrumaist doctrine for which reason there will be no need to influence the delegates.
He accused Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom on whose behalf Richmond Keelson was making the allegation of rather being in the pocket of the opposition party.
Meanwhile the head of Communications for the CPP, William Doworkpor has dismissed media reports suggesting the Congress could be scuttled with a court injunction.
He told Joy News the party had received no writ from any aggrieved person, adding the Congress will go on as planned.
He explained however that three persons in the Eastern Region branch have questioned the legitimacy of some of the regional delegates and have threatened court action against the executives, explaining that will in no way affect the congress.
