Former President John Mahama says if voted into power, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will raise the morale of the country’s security agencies.

He said the security agencies' morale has been dampened by the seeming state empowerment of vigilante groups in the Akufo-Addo’s regime.

Speaking at a rally in the Tamale North Constituency, the NDC presidential candidate raised concerns about how the National Security has now become an operational tool instead of a coordinating unit.

“The national security agencies is not an operational wing of the security service it is a coordinative wing of the service, they don’t go around carrying AK47 and pistols.

"But because they have gone to put their invisible forces and delta forces in the national security they have given them weapons,” he emphasised.

The presidential candidate said the recent surge in robbery cases and insecurity issues in the country are as a result of handling arms and ammunitions to party vigilantes.

Recounting an incident during the exhibition exercise, Mr Mahama stated that, he witnessed an armed delta force man threatening a police officer.

“I was very sad during the exhibition exercise when I saw somebody ostensibly from the delta force in plain clothes holding a pistol threatening a policeman in uniform.”

He said the use of these vigilante groups by the incumbent government has lowered the morale of the country’s security agencies.

“That is how low our security service is forming and that is why they can’t even protect us from armed robbery.”
