As the country’s health facilities struggle to meet its blood supply to patients with various medical conditions including accident cases, it has become very crucial for various organisations to support them.
The National Insurance Commission (NIC) identified this as a major concern and launched its maiden ‘Insurance Industry Blood Donation Campaign’ in 2021. This was targeted at management, staff and agents of the insurance industry coming together to extend this corporate social responsibility activity to the blood banks.
The NIC started this campaign in collaboration with the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA), the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG), The Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG), the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme, the National Association of Ghana Insurance Agents (NAGIA), WAICA Re and the Ghana Insurance College (GIC).
In the first edition in 2021, 801 pints of blood were collected through the exercise.
The figure jumped to 2,015 in 2022, and 2,203 in 2023.
Since its inception, the Insurance industry has been adjudged the overall best in the corporate donor category engaged in blood donation over the last three years.
The NIC has donated a total of 5,019 pints of blood to the National Blood Service Ghana, recognizing that the blood service that gives patients access to safe blood in sufficient quantities is a key component of an effective health system.
The National Insurance Commission blood donation campaign is focused on mainly saving the lives of pregnant women, children with cancer, and accident victims. Mr Michael Andoh, the acting Commissioner of Insurance, in Ghana, pledged the commission's continuous supply of blood while lauding organizations and individuals for patronizing this annual blood donation campaign.
The NIC has dedicated the month of August to the start of its blood donation campaigns.
This year’s blood donation campaign will be launched on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the Head office of the NIC.
In an interview, Mr Michael Andoh stated that he is humbled by the recent award at the World Blood Donor Day and dedicated the award to the entire insurance industry and the kind Ghanaians who donated their blood in the past and continue to do so.
He continued, I have come to realize that sometimes all it takes for somebody to cross from death to life is a pint of blood.”
With the 2024 campaign to be launched this August, Mr Michael Andoh has called on all insurance companies, brokers, agents and the general public to support this worthy cause.
