The National Media Commission (NMC) has accused government of by passing laid down administrative procedures in resolving the controversy over Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s inability to telecast President Mills’ recent address to the UN.
GBC boss William Ampem Darko was summoned to the Information Ministry following the no show and a five-member committee set up to look into the matter.
But in a statement Chairman of the Commission, Paul Adu-Gyamfi, said although the commission shares the concerns of the ministry, it is unhappy the appropriate laid down procedures for resolving the matter were not followed.
Under the 1992 Constitution, the commission is enjoined to insulate the state-owned media organizations from governmental control.
Mr Adu Gyamfi said the NMC would not countenance any instructions that would act to undermine its constitutional obligation.
According to him, the Ministry of Information should have first liaised with it in finding answers and solutions to the cause of the failure.
The NMC Chairman however expressed confidence in the board and management of GBC and Mr Adu Gyamfi pointed out that the board should be able to deal with any infraction that might have resulted in the failure to telecast live the President's address to the United Nations.
