Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, a presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the party’s focus ahead of its internal contest must go beyond selecting a flagbearer to choosing a candidate capable of winning the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, he stressed that the stakes are high for the party as it prepares to rebuild and reposition itself for a return to power.
According to Dr. Adutwum, the NPP needs a leader who can appeal not only to party delegates but also to the broader Ghanaian electorate.
“We don’t just want a flagbearer; we want someone who can actually win the 2028 elections,” he said, adding that electoral success will depend on credibility, competence and the ability to connect with the aspirations of ordinary Ghanaians.
The former Education Minister explained that winning future elections will require a clear vision, strong policy ideas and effective leadership.
He argued that the party must carefully assess the strengths of its aspirants and consider who is best placed to unify the party and present a compelling alternative to voters.
“The candidate must be someone who understands the problems of the country and has practical solutions,” Dr Adutwum noted.
Dr Adutwum said his decision to contest is driven by his belief that the NPP must offer leadership that inspires confidence and trust ahead of 2028.
He maintained that party members and delegates are increasingly aware of the need to make strategic choices that enhance the party’s electoral chances, insisting that the ultimate goal of the internal race should be victory at the national polls.
