Leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Agbogbloshie in Accra, have pledged not to engage in violence when the Supreme Court delivers its judgement on the election petition. The market has been a hotspot of bloody political violence over the years. In 2009, violent clashes between supporters of the two main political parties there recorded three deaths, and varying degrees of injury. During a durbar held Sunday ahead of the August 29 judgment day, leaders of the factions indicated their readiness to accept the court's judgement. The durbar was organised by the Kayayei Bihagu Association of Ghana with support from the Civic Forum Initiative. The Agbobloshie NDC chairman, Abdulai Suleimana admonished; "The supreme court verdict, whatever the outcome everybody should accept it. Ghana first before all the political parties". "I'm advising my NDC brothers and sisters, we don't want to hear anything about someone coming out to do something which will bring the party's name into disrepute. We are warning them [that] whoever goes against [the court's] ruling, then the law will take its course." On his part, the NPP chairman of the area Seidu Tahiru said they will work hard to change the perception that Agbobloshie is a violent spot. "This our Agbobloshie, our name spoil (sic), people are calling us violent people [but] we are not violent people. We are all one people, we all come from [the] north so we don't want any violence again..." Joy News' Joseph Opoku Gakpo who was at the durbar reported that numerous Accra-based chiefs of northern tribes as well as scores of head potters, truck pushers and yam sellers attended the event to listen to "their chief's preach peace". One of the chiefs stressed, "What we are saying to the kayayei [head potters] and to all others here is that when the results come, as long as the leadership of the two parties have decided to accept the decision of the court and to comply, anyone else has no other thing to do but to follow their footsteps."
