The National Democratic Congress has rubbished a demonstration by the New Patriotic Party youth wing Young Patriot, describing it as a complete waste of time. According to a member of the government Communications team, Peter Otokunor the demonstration was nothing but a “desperate” and “frustrated” cry for attention. Hundreds of Ghanaians hit the streets Tuesday to protest what they claim was the high cost of living under President John Mills. A leading member of the demonstrators John Kumah accused the president of failing to honour his campaign promises and turning a blind eye to obvious cases of corruption in his government. He said at a time when crude oil was being sold on the world market at $147 per barrel in 2008, petrol was sold on the local market under President Kufuor's regime at 5.00 cedis. However with the price easing down to $110 per barrel in 2011 under president John Mills, petrol is now being sold at 7.00 cedis. "Obviously this is not the promise President Mills gave to Ghanaians." He said, adding the National Health Insurance Scheme is in complete disarray. John Kumah also accused the government of deliberately running down the Tema Oil Refinery because its leading members benefit financially if gas and other finished products are imported into the country. But in a reaction to these comments, Peter Otokunor said the claims by the Young Patriots are not sustainable. According to him, “the NPP never did anything good for Ghana” in the eight years it was in office for which reason it was shown the exit. On the gas shortage and alleged mismanagement at TOR, Otokonor said the NPP has no moral justification to be casting such aspersions. He said the NPP instituted the TOR debt recovery levy to offset a 250 million cedis debt incurred at TOR when it assumed office in 2001. However after raising some 720 million cedis from the levy, the NPP used it to fund serial callers and journalist who were sympathetic to the NPP cause, he maintained. It took the NDC to pay over 900 million cedis of the 1.2 billion cedis TOR debt left behind by the NPP, he said. According to him, the NPP shopped for loans at saloons and has no right to question the $3 billion Chinese loans procured by the NDC government. On the economy the NDC Communication member said the government has done in two-and-a-half-years what the NPP struggled but failed to do in eight years. He cited the single digit inflation chalked by the NDC. He said President Mills never promised to turn Ghana into heaven but maintained before the end of his tenure a lot would have been achieved. He emphasised that Mills will honour all his campaign promises before leaving office.
