Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence in the Ghana Police Service to ensure a peaceful conduct of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
Speaking at the signing of a peace pact by the party's presidential aspirants, he commended the presence of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and his senior officers at the ceremony, describing their assurances as reassuring.
“We’re gratified by the presence of the Inspector-General of Police and his senior officers at this ceremony, and by the undertakings he has given us today. They are reassuring symbols that the proceedings of 31st January 2026 will be conducted in peace and security. IGP, we count on you and your men and women to do a good job,” he said.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, on his part, assured the public that the Ghana Police Service is fully prepared to provide security for the party’s primaries across the country.
According to him, the NPP formally wrote to the police some weeks ago to request that security for the elections be handled solely by the Ghana Police Service. He disclosed that all polling centres have been identified and that comprehensive operational plans have been finalised.
“We have been able to identify all the areas where the elections will take place. We have 276 plus one polling centres, and we have made our operational plans,” Mr Yohuno stated.
He announced that at least 70 police officers will be deployed to each polling centre, with senior officers nationwide overseeing operations. He added that the police have put in place a layered security strategy involving inner, middle and outer deployments, with heavy reinforcement at the outer layer.
The IGP explained that while the police will lead security operations nationwide, military support may be required only in Bawku due to its unique security situation, with the rest of the country having the military on standby.
Mr Yohuno further assured stakeholders that the police service has undertaken extensive training and coordination with regional commanders and is fully ready to secure the exercise.
He thanked the NPP leadership for the confidence reposed in the Ghana Police Service, describing it as a sign of trust in the professionalism of the police.
