The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said that President Mills must be in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks he is the best leader in Africa as has been stated by UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon.
According to Sammy Awuku, who is a member of the NPP’s Communications team, if President Mills was indeed the best president in Africa, he should have been invited to the various World Summits.
Mr Ban Ki Moon last Saturday commended President Mills for his role in the peace process in La Cote d’ Ivoire.
He said President Mills’ exemplary leadership role in the crisis in Africa was unmatched, and described him as ‘the best leader on the continent’.
But Sammy Awuku told Adom News on Monday that leaders who are considered the best in Africa are the ones often invited to World Summits such as that of the G8 and G20 so President Mills who has not been to any of these summits cannot be the best in Africa.
He stated that perhaps the UN boss wanted to mock President Mills with his remarks.
He cited African leaders such as Jacob Zuma, Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Festus Mogae of Botswana as the leaders who are doing well in Africa and have all been invited to World Summits adding that former President Kufuor has even received invitations before.
However, the National Organizer of the NDC, Yaw Boateng Gyan disagreed with Sammy Awuku’s statements.
He stated that if President Mills has been adjudged the best President in Africa, Ghanaians should celebrate the achievement devoid of political affiliation.
Yaw Boateng Gyan noted that he was excited when former President Kufuor was nominated for the Mo Ibrahim award even though he was in opposition at that time because as far as he is concerned Ghana's Presidents are presidents for the whole country and not a particular party.
