The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Abayifa Karbo has raised concerns about what he says is the high rate of inaccuracies in most stories put out by the state-owned newspaper, Daily Graphic. He said the recurrent errors in the publication of the Daily Graphic newspaper calls their credibility into question which may result in a decrease in their revenue to the detriment of the state. The lead story in the June 20 edition of the Daily Graphic headlined $400m for roads: Sofoline, Achimota-Ofankor projects to benefit claimed the World Bank has allocated $400 million towards the completion of four major road projects and the general development of the country's transport sector. The Graphic report also stated that the World Bank has also earmarked $340 million for the implementation of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA). But the Spokesperson for the Vice-President, John Jinapor noted that the figures in the Daily Graphic were inaccurate because the $400 million is not meant for the Sofoline, Achimota-Ofankor roads. He explained that the $400 million was an already existing facility and not part of any new commitments the Bank has made with Ghana during a visit to the USA by Vice President John Mahama. On SADA, Mr. Jinapor said the government has been able to secure $60 million for its implementation and another $40 million for the rice project in the Afram Plains. John Jinapor who blamed the situation on an error in communication rubbished suggestions that it was part of the ruling National Democratic Congress' (NDC) propaganda. However, Anthony Karbo on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, described the situation as pathetic, complaining of what he said was the continued embarrassment of the state-owned newspaper by some individuals just to score political points. According to him, Daily Graphic as the state-owned newspaper, should be objective and also put out issues of national interest and not issues in the interest of the government. The NPP National Youth Organiser recalled a publication in the May 23, 2011 edition of the Daily Graphic with the headline President Mills, best leader in Africa, quoted the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-Moon, to have lauded President John Evans Atta Mills for his role in the peace process in La Cote d’Ivoire which he said turned out not to be the true reflection of what Ban Ki-Moon had said. Anthony Karbo said even though Daily Graphic has the right to exercise its discretion, it must be free of biases and devoid of political connotation. While charging the media to provide accurate reports, Anthony Karbo called on the Daily Graphic to check and double check their facts before putting out any publication.
