Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama says the promise by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to provide $1 million for each constituency annually has been unsuccessful.
He stated that the projects under the policy were already being undertaken by existing District Assemblies with funds given them from government.
Mr Mahama made said this in an interview with Adom FM and TV presenters, Philip Osei Bonsu, Chief Jerry Forson, and Omanhnene Kwabena Asante, Monday morning.
“This ‘$1 million per constituency’ promise has been a total flop. When I visited a certain constituency, not even one of the four public toilets were completed,” he stated.
The former President argued that the “fantastic” nature of the promises has affected the implementation of most of them because the expectations of Ghanaians were high regarding outcomes.
“They are taking the people’s money for recycling and giving it back to them and I don’t think some of these projects are what the people really want,” Mr Mahama noted.
The NDC has on several occasions criticised this policy by the government.
At the maiden edition of the party’s Weekly Press Briefing, the Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka alleged that President Akufo-Addo has “monumentally failed” to honour his promise of providing every constituency with $1 million per year.
Contrary to his claims, some public office holders have said in the past that the initiative by government is working.
One of such is the Biakoye District Chief Executive (DCE), Comfort A. Attah, who said in 2019 that the policy through the Coastal Development Authority was operational.
She said the initiative was not meant to put money on the table of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies but to enable them to benefit in the form of developmental projects.
