Yendi Senior High School (SHS) has secured a slot at the preliminary stage of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz after winning their regional qualification.
The school booked one of the six available seats for the Northern region to join seeded Tamale SHS at the national championship.
In what came as a surprise to many, the royals thwarted Kalpohin Senior High School (KALISCO) from qualifying for the national championship.
They out-competed Kalpohin SHS after winning the contest with 41 points.
Many conceived it was an easy contest for the students of Kalpohin SHS given their past experience of blocking St. Charles Seminary SHS for two years running during regional qualifications.
KALISCO had to bow out of the competition with 23 points, while the Pagna Nima Queens of the North - Tamale Girls’ SHS - trailed them with 5 points.
The 5-man squad of Yendi SHS, based in the Dagbon state of the Northern region, lived up to the title of their monarch, Yaa- Naa (King of Strength) by subduing their contenders in the academic battle.
The boys from the school wowed the audience with their accurate and speedy delivery of questions that involved calculations.
Their qualification ends a 3-year absence from the national tournament after losing out in 2019.
The camp of Kalpohin SHS was however moody with some students nearly shedding tears.
It was least expected by them to miss out on the national championship with an 18-point margin.
They are in anticipation of a better performance to reclaim their stance at the national tournament.
