Authorities at the Nungua Senior High have been racing against time to save the school from closure.

An Accra Magistrate Court had given a November 24 deadline for the school to be shut down if insanitary conditions at the school are not fixed.

Joy News is learning toilet facilities in the school had been in a deplorable state.

In the girls' dormitory, only two toilets had been left open for use by over 500 students. Even with the two, there has been no water to flush anytime the students use the facility. The situation is not any different in the boys' dormitory. 

Authorities of the school found themselves in such a quagmire after pulling down an old toilet facility to make way for the construction of a new one.

There was however a delay in the construction works, a situation that created a lot of pressure on the few toilet facilities for the school.

The court ordered the closure of the school if the situation did not improve by Friday, November 24. The court sent its officials to the school to assess the situation before a final determination is made on the matter.

Joy News’ Ernest Kojo Manu reports that the judge has been in a meeting with school authorities as well as the board members to find an amicable solution to the problem.

With the deadline for the closure of the school almost up, the MP for the area, the Old Students Association as well as the chief of the Nungua have all been working to fix the toilet facilities in the school.

The MP of the area, Naa Afoley Quaye, secured five mobile toilets, three for the girls dormitory and two for the boys, all of which were delivered on the day of the deadline.

The old students came to the school's aid with ¢6,000 of the budgeted ¢12,000 to connect water to the facility to ease the situation. In addition to that, the chiefs and elders of Nungua Traditional area have also donated ¢10,000 to help solve the problem and prevent the school from closure.

The World Bank in collaboration with the Assembly is also putting up a new toilet facility for the school, which is currently under construction.

With the steps taken so far by the school authorities, the Magistrate Court is withholding its order for closure at least for next week.
