Former President John Kufuor has been urged to be the binding factor between factions within the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). A leading member of the NPP is challenging the former president to serve as a neutral father to help end the factionalism within the party. Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe says he is deeply worried about the disunity that has characterized the activities of the NPP since it lost power in 2009. “In 1979, this great tradition was once again faced with leadership problems; problems that made us lose a general election. No wonder 17 people fighting for leadership positions in the party caused us greatly in the year 2008. These acts of needless confusion must stop and must stop now. I call on President J.A. Kufuor to be the neutral father figure that this party so badly needs to heal the wounds of the past,” he said. Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe was addressing a news conference in Accra. His plea follows recent misunderstandings that have rocked the party in various parts of the country, most of which have been drawn on disunity between supporters of some presidential hopefuls within the party. Already all 19 council members of the party in the Obuasi constituency have resigned from the party. Party chairman Peter Mac Manu has however hinted that the party is working on resolving the stalemate. Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, however, said his call for the former President to be neutral is not an indication that he is supporting Alan Kyerematen as is being speculated. “Kufuor is a respectable senior person of our party. Apart from the fact that he has been president of this country for eight years, he has tremendous experience in politics and I believe strongly that if he makes the move, definitely, the perceived problem will be solved,” he indicated.
