The former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, is set to open his defence before the Accra High Court on June 20.
Mr Ampofo, along with Anthony Kweku Boahen, a former Deputy Communications Officer of the NDC, is on trial for allegedly plotting to harm the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Adukwei Mensah.
Having recently returned from the United States after undergoing minor surgery, Mr Ampofo was scheduled to begin his defence yesterday.
However, his counsel, Mr. Tony Lithur, informed the court that his client was unwell.
"My Lord, you gave us today (Thursday, May 30) to open our defence.
Fortunately, the first accused (Ofosu-Ampofo) is back in the country, and it appears the long flight has aggravated his leg a bit," Lithur explained.
Mr Lithur communicated his client’s condition to the prosecution, which was confirmed by Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who agreed to the adjournment.
On April 16, 2019, both Ampofo and Boahen were granted bail of GH¢100,000 each with one surety after pleading not guilty to charges of conspiracy to cause harm and assault on a public officer.
The charges stem from allegations that they incited NDC party communicators to verbally insult and incite violence against the EC Chairperson and the National Peace Council (NPC).
In November 2023, Mr Lithur's team presented a letter indicating that their client was in the U.S. undergoing treatment for post-surgery complications.
The prosecution has closed its case after calling three witnesses to testify against the accused. Now, the stage is set for Mr Ampofo to present his defence on June 20.
