Some members of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly calling themselves “CCMA assembly members caucus” have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to re-consider his decision to remove Mr Anthony Egyir Aikins as the Mayor. They said it was during the tenure of Mr Aikins as the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) that Cape Coast saw some development in road sector. According to them, it was under his tenure that road projects, notably the OLA and Ankaful roads, were constructed purposely to link the north of Cape Coast to the south and thereby facilitate the total development of the Metropolis. At a press conference to make the appeal, the spokesperson of the caucus, Mr James Paapa Buckman, wondered why the MCE after being sent to Chile with the taxpayer’s money to gain additional knowledge in the local governance system would only come back home to be removed from office. James alleged that some power brokers who hail from the Region are behind the removal of the MCE. He added that these power brokers are the same people delaying the Kotokuraba Market Project with their power play. The spokesperson said Mr Aikins was reported to the late President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills several times to be removed but the ex President thoroughly investigated the issues raised at the time which turned out to be untrue. Mr Buckman said the frequent change of the Mayor of Cape Coast is impeding the progress of the Oguaa Township and its surrounding communities. He appealed to President Mahama to ignore the false rumours being peddled about Mr Aikins and re-nominate him for a second term to continue his vision of opening Cape Coast up for foreign investments to aid the accelerated growth of the Metropolis.
