Former MP for Adentan constituency, Kojo Adu-Asare is demanding that the AMA boss renders unqualified apology to Madam Theodosia Oko after the decision by the AMA to rename the National Hockey Stadium after the late President John Evans Mills, backfired.
According to him, the decision by the city authority was in bad taste and completely unjustifiable because it has already been named after the designer of the country's flag, Madam Theodosia Okoh.
The Hockey Stadium which is known as the "Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium" has been changed to “John Evans Atta Mills Hockey Stadium”, in honour of Prof Mills' achievements in the sport according to the mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije.
The announcement generated a instinctive reaction from the public and madam Okoh who believed she had been unfairly treated by the nation after her immense contribution to the raising of the pitch.
The Office of the President Thursday directed the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to halt any process to rename the national Hockey Stadium after the late Prof. Atta Mills. The Presidency has also summoned the AMA boss to answer questions about the AMA’s decision.
Meanwhile, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii-Sen on Thursday, Kojo Adu-Asare called on the AMA and its Chief Executive, Alfred Vanderpuje to as a matter of urgency show remorse and render an unqualified apology to madam Theodosia Okoh for the unnecessary error committed.
He noted if even madam Okoh has not done anything in hockey, the design of the national flag is enough achievement to deserve a national honour so the AMA erred in trying to take it away from her.
“The decision of the AMA is completely wrong. Even if she didn’t contribute to hockey, her design of the national flag is even enough achievement to deserve an honour so I think the AMA erred in attempting to change her name on the pitch.
"The AMA and vanderpuije should go and apologize to her for their unnecessary action. This should not be politicized at all because it is wrong,” he bellowed.
Mr. Adu Asare stressed that it is not the duty of the AMA to be naming national assets.
