One person has been confirmed dead following clashes between police and residents of Adina in Ketu South District in the Volta Region, Wednesday.
Raymond Etse Zevor was shot at the back when police fired warning shots at the protesters. Head wounds could be seen on the deceased.
The District Chief Executive for Ketu South Parker Lamptey confirmed that Raymond died at the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds.
The Keta Divisional Police Commander, Supt Alex Wowolo and three other officers were also injured by the protesters, the DCE added.
The community is kicking against the takeover of a reserved concession of the Keta Lagoon for the indigenes by the Satelin Salt Company.
Angry residents burnt two of the company’s vehicles during the protest.
An opinion leader in the community explained that the residents are angry because they have consistently been deceived.
Police have arrested seven persons in connection with Wednesday’s clashes.
The DCE said a mediating team has been asked to broker peace between the residents and the salt mining firm.
“We have sent a letter to the Bishop of Keta-Akatsi diocese to intervene so that the two parties can stay down and resolve the issues”, he said.
