The One Ghana Movement has called on the government to reverse its directive to close all land borders, a move the group describes as discriminatory and unconstitutional.
The organisation argues that the closure, enforced under the authority of Interior Minister Henry Quartey, disproportionately disenfranchises citizens who have registered to vote but need to return to Ghana by road.
In a statement signed by its Director, Senyo K. Hosi, the Movement highlighted the inconsistency of the decision, pointing out that citizens travelling by air face no such restrictions.
“Citizens who have registered to vote and are returning to their country by road are being disenfranchised by the order,” the statement read, stressing that the closure could lead to legal challenges against the election results and potentially disturb the nation’s peace.
The group urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Interior Minister, and the government to immediately reopen land borders to ensure every eligible Ghanaian can exercise their constitutional right to vote.
“The effect of this surprise, blanket, unconscionable, and discriminatorily unconstitutional order could become the basis of a legal challenge of the outcome of today’s elections,” it warned.
The Movement also expressed concerns over a press release purportedly issued by the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), which they claim imposes unlawful restrictions on media monitoring of the elections.
They called on the National Election Security Taskforce (NEST), led by Inspector-General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to denounce any actions by regional security councils or unauthorized military deployments that contravene national rules.
The statement concluded with an appeal for fair and transparent elections, urging authorities to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
