The New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary debacle in Suhum has been settled at last with the nomination of incumbent Frederick Opare Ansah as the candidate. Opare Ansah was nominated by the National Executive Council of the party after three failed attempts to win the slot during the party’s primaries. All three primaries organised earlier on to select a Parliamentary candidate for the party ended in a stalemate with the incumbent and his competitor Bryan Acheampong, an IT expert winning polling 51 votes-a-piece on each occasion. The results sparked several controversies as to the way forward in electing a candidate to represent the constituency on the party’s ticket. Bryan Acheampong confirmed picking nomination forms at the Electoral Commission, even though the party was yet to resolve the deadlock. In an earlier interview with Joy News, Acheampong insisted the party must organise a fresh primary to elect a candidate, adding the people of Suhum deserve an elected parliamentary aspirant. But party Chairman Peter Mac Manu, says there is very little time for another primary. He told Joy news in an exclusive interview on Friday; the decision to nominate the incumbent was arrived at after a successful meeting with the two candidates and other executives. According to him, Bryan Acheampong has agreed to step down and support the incumbent to retain the seat. On the likely division the party’s decision may have on party supporters in the constituency, Mr. Mac Manu said the party executives will convene a meeting with the constituency executives to chart a peaceful way forward.
