The Editor-in-chief of The New Crusading Guide Newspaper Malik Kweku Baako Jnr. has been ostracized from the Convention People’s Party.
This follows his own public disclosure that he has since 1996 been voting for the New Patriotic Party presidential candidates in national elections.
Mr. Baako, the vociferous political and social analyst with a reputation to quote official documents and sources, also disclosed voting for the CPP Parliamentary candidates in his constituency, and raising logistics for other CPP candidates in other constituencies across the country but his party leaders have not been impressed.
On Thursday, the Communication Director of the Convention People’s Party said the party has seized to recognize Kweku Baako as a member of the party.
William Doworkpor told Joy News’ Elvis Adjetey “the CPP is not a prison camp where we say that if you are member yesterday you must continue to remain a member.”
He said Kweku Baako has a choice to decide which presidential candidate he will vote for but he should not be referred to as a CPP member.
“He is known, but he is not [a CPP member]. If somebody says he is not going to vote for the CPP presidential candidate, upfront; simple logic should tell us that, that person is not a member of that party,” he said.
In a reaction, Malik Baako said he would not engage the leadership of the CPP on an issue he has for years quibbled with the party over.
He had always argued that the CPP be grown from Parliament, saying, with a credible presence in Parliament the party will grow - a position, he said, majority in the party disagrees with.
“They are entitled to it and I am a democrat. And because they have won the day on that level, I took a conscious decision not to engage anybody; not to go and create problems for anybody in the leadership; to allow them to have their peace of mind, the time and space to grow the party the way they want to, so that nobody can say that I am part of the problem. That is why for some time I have taken this conscious position.”
“.. Look, there are people who supported my line; who voted or campaigned for Mr. Kufuor and others, but who today are in the CPP and some became candidates. They are CPP members."
He said his decision to vote for an NPP presidential candidate and a CPP Parliamentary Candidate is based on his “political calculation, strategic analysis of the balance of forces and the alignment of forces.”
He observed the CPP in its fragmented form cannot be a viable political option, especially for the youth, and called for a strategy to increase the party’s presence in Parliament before a genuine contest for the presidential slot should be considered.
For emphasis, Mr Baako again stated that he voted for General Erskine of the People’s Heritage Party (PHP) in 1992, voted for the Great Alliance with Mr Kufuor on the ticket of the NPP in 1996, voted again for Mr. Kufuor in 2000. In 2004 he voted to retain Mr. Kufuor in office, and voted for Nana Akufo-Addo in 2008 who lost power to then candidate John Mills of the NDC.
He stated unequivocally that he will campaign and again vote for Nana Akufo-Addo in 2012 elections, but will vote for the CPP parliamentary candidate in his constituency.
