Parliament has approved a €10 million supplier agreement for the importation of some 520 tractors to aid in the mechanisation of agric.
Joy News’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo reported Wednesday, that the Minority in the House raised concerns about the affordability of the tractors.
The Minority, he said were concerned that despite the expected subsidy on the tractors, the ordinary farmer may not be able to purchase them.
Despite their concerns, the House went ahead to approve the agreement, the reporter said on The Pulse on Joy News TV.
What else has the Akuffo-Addo administration done in the Agric sector?
Before he was elected, Nana Akufo-Addo made various promises to farmers, the prime of those being, ‘Planting for Food and Jobs programme’ (PFJ).
The policy included supplying farmers and potential farmers with seeds and fertiliser at subsidised prices.
In 2018, the Agric Minister, Owusu Afriyie Akoto said the programme created more than 700,000 jobs.
Opposition parties including the NDC and some civil society groups, however, challenged the government on the figure and the plausibility of same.
The government, however, announced that the PFJ was so successful that a spinoff of it, ‘Rearing for Food and Jobs’ will start in 2019.
In December 2018, the National Best Farmer also walked away with GH¢480,000.
